issue five -- gemini 2008 edition

namely, gemini 2008 by dope recordings.
this event was held on june 14th near boulder, colorado. i attended gemini for the first time last year, and was determined to make it again this time around. once again, it was simply amazing! a beautiful location, great music, and wonderful people. you can listen to all of the sets at doperecordings.com. the following are some of my favorite sets from the night.

<> alert
dark, minimal dubstep set played as the sun was sinking below the horizon. the woods truly became creepy for a while...

<> ten and tracer
following up alert, this set was minimal and dreamy and weird. i loved it! good shit.

<> josh23
bangin'! i've only seen josh play early morning sets that are melodic and experimental. i had no idea he could rock this hard! he played one of my favorite tracks, "pink peonies forest," and it made my night.

<> attentat
i was working the front gate during most of this set. it was getting quite cold up there and i was shivering, but i could not stop moving to what i could hear through the trees. i finally made it back down for the last twenty minutes -- a very good late night set.

issue 4

namely, "i'm sarah goldfarb, and i'm gonna be on television!"
** live at watergate
** not for the men
i've really been digging this guy's stuff lately and have picked up several of his tracks. energetic and bouncy, frequently weird, head trip stuff. perfect for dark warehouses. the watergate mix is quite good, but i haven't had the chance to listen to the other one yet. let me know what you think.

someone else
** live at the bunker
this mix was recorded over a year ago at the bunker in brooklyn. but someone else has a style that i really love. growly found-sound mosaics on stripped down minimal grooves. he some other good mixes (dj set & live at the bunker 2004) posted on unfoundsound records, which, by the way, just posted release #37 a couple of days ago!!
be sure to check out the other mixes from the bunker. however, they are all podcasts, so you have to subscribe first. i don't know much about podcasts, so good luck. and if you come across any good ones, let me know!

jamie drouin
** sonambulo
a beautiful ambient track that is a little over half an hour long. i was told that i should listen to it alone in my bedroom, lights off, and i would have an amazing experience. i ended up listening to it late one night in my car, under the nearly-full moon, windows open with crickets chirping on both sides, and beautiful red rocks punctuating the clear sky. i did, in fact, have an amazing experience. thank you for the recommendation josh! be sure to check out the other releases on rope swing cities, a netlabel based in colorado!

van hai
** live demo
i listened to this on my way out to gemini this past weekend (if you didn't make it, you definitely missed out. sucker.) it gets a bit melodic-trancey at points but i really enjoyed it as a whole. sedated and dreamy techno.

wesen
** machine drum set & video
there's something to be said for creating a substantial piece of work from a single piece of machinery. and damn, machine drums are sexy. this one was contributed by 66minek, who has a couple of songs up on his web page that you can listen to. but pester him to make more music, since he now has that beautiful machine drum back in his possession...

noze
** live at mutek 2008 (sorry, it's megaupload, but you might be able to find it elsewhere)
when i first listened to these guys i didn't like them much, but they're growing on me. it's light-hearted, jolly, and a great soundtrack for getting drunk. cheers!

namely, acid circus & drumcell, the cats from droid behavior
**www.droidbehavior.com - check out many live recordings under "archives.evidence"
throughout my stay in socal, these guys never ceased to inspire and move me. they were recently featured in xlr8r magazine and one of their tracks was used in a recent ritchie hawtin mix. they have pioneered and cultivated the techno scene in la and have literally been involved with the majority of parties in the city. their sets are full of energy and are guaranteed to rock your face off. if you're a promoter looking for new talent, book these guys!!

cio d'or
**polar 22 from her website (http://www.ciodor.de/)
Check out another mix at the modyfier website
her mixes are progressive, minimal, cold and dark. i listened to this mix late one night while driving back from a san fran weekend trip, then again on a lonely highway headed out to the droid behavior outdoor party. perfect for the late hours, before the sun comes up.

[a]pendics.shuffle aka kenneth j. gibson
**live at namm afterhours
this is the mix he played at a droid behavior party months back. it was a narrow warehouse venue that was pushing bass through like crazy (thank you victor!!). i saw him again at yuri's night bay area in san francisco just a little while ago. he was playing on some seriously huge stacks of speakers and rocking the crowd with his control of the low end. his mixes are minimal but banging, with weird and mind-melting moments. additionally, he has a plentiful discography. if this guy comes through town, make sure you go see him!

santogold
she released her long-awaited, self-titled album about a month ago. you should recognize some of the songs on here, like the freq nasty remix of "creator." the album as a whole is quite decent; i recommend you pick it up, especially since it's cheap :)

forgotten names
revy has a new netlabel mix up that you should check out.

i recently got a copy of deru's "trying to remember" album, which is quite good. low-key, but very interesting stuff.

david last
i highly recommend his album the push pull. he has several releases on unfoundsound records and various other labels. for those in the denver area, he frequents communikey and dope recordings events. check him out if you haven't done so yet.

** the push pull at theagriculture.com

anders ilar
the following link is a podcast from resident advisor. there are some parts that get a little weird, but otherwise and enjoyable listen, especially when you're just chilling out.
** resident advisor podcast

alka rex
i came across this duo on david last's website, then saw their name pop up several more times over the next few days. some fun and bouncy minimal with dissonant and weird moments. the following mix posted on the modyfier music blog. be sure to check out some of the other postings on his site.
** process part 70 (elastic modyfier mix
)

issue 1

tleilaxu

unfoundsound records has an incredible live mix by tleilaxu, which was performed in june 2007. this is currently one of my favorite mixes, with deep & dubby bass lines and minimal techno rhythms

“sleepercel” is his latest release, as unfoundsound’s 35th release. it contains four tracks and two remixes by marc ashken and same & dave & lowren. the patterns he creates with found-sound samples blow my mind. check it out.

deru

this mix was passed on to me by a friend and has been on repeat in car for the past week. a calming and interesting set with a nice groove. deru will be playing april 12th at the nasa ames research center near san francisco at the yuri’s night bay area event. other artists include amon tobin, lusine, john tejada, and [a]pendics shuffle.

revy

a buddy of mine, who now lives in japan, has been busy making monthly mixes for the melenick sessions. next density 3 was released in february 2008 and consists of mostly net label releases. i truly admire revy’s style and approach to techno.

agnes

the following is the set he played in LA in october at deeper moods. unfortunately not too many people made it out for the event, but the set was great! i'm a big fan of agnes – check out his other releases on labels like sthalmaudio, unfoundsound, perspectiv, minibar, and others.
